SELL - Student Enterprise Learning Link

The SELL BusinessNZ Planning Experience programme is a three-day practical business education programme for Year 11 students (in Terms 1-3) and Year 10 students (in Term 4) that involves students:

  • forming virtual companies
  • researching and deciding on a product to develop
  • writing a business plan
  • launching their virtual product in an oral presentation competition ("Dragons Den")

Why SELL?

The SELL BusinessNZ Planning Experience programme is remarkably successful. It is an intensive, positive, business experience, and for most students it is the first time they have encountered such experiential learning.

Students learn by doing. Whether they succeed or fail depends on the effort and enthusiasm that they put in. The SELL workshops are highly interactive, with students developing skills, understandings and attitudes about how a successful business operates.

SELL is delivered FREE to schools by Young Enterprise Trust staff, all of whom have had practical business experience or secondary school management experience.

Students are divided into ten teams of eight and using the latest business theory, create a hypothetical product, set up a company and prepare a business strategy to produce and sell the product. On the final day each team's business ideas, creations and discoveries go on display at a business expo. Judging panels comprise local business people, celebrities and Members of Parliament who evaluate each team's presentation and mark them on a range of criteria. Students learn to accept constructive advice from the judges on how to continually improve on their presentation, 'make it better than before' and learn how to critically review and critique their performance.
